The role of guidance and
counselling cannot be over
emphases, speaking during an
interview, The Deputy Registrar
Guidance’s counseling Uwa Shehu
Abubakar disclose the main purpose of
establishing the department (G & C) is
to provide an effective and functional
guide among the students of the
polytechnic.
She also added that Guidance
and counselling are set of strategic
approach given to an individual or a
procedure student undergoes to help
them overcome emotion, social and
psychological problems which are
evitable among the students of the
polytechnics.
On her remark Uwa Shehu noted that all
the officials of Guidance and counselling
need to be democratic
by creating or providing an open
environment for discussion between
students and Lecturers in her own
words, the registrar also said, all the
lecturers of the polytechnic can serve
as guidance officials, calling on all the
staff to be self oriented, creating an
environment that will help students to
understand their selves and also over
come all life ramifications, because
self sufficient in making realistic and
positive selections, and growth in
human relationships, guidance and
counselling prepare students for adult
life as well as help them to acquire
appropriate attitude and values, the
basic principles of guidance and
counselling are to respect students
autonomy feel empathy and
understanding non-judgmental
attitudes, confidentiality trust and
collaboration approach, and
professional boundaries, she added
more basic element by clarifying and
assessing the present problems, few
among the problem uwa mentioned
were cultism, and dressing code.
Uwa Shehu disclosed the main
benefit of counselling is to provide
better expression and management of
emotions including anger, relief from
depression, anxiety, and other mental
health problems.
Effective and functional guide
can build students confident and
decision making skills’
Counselling refers to a relevant
piece of information provided by a
superior to help students solves life
issues, the professional advice given
by a counsellor to an individual to help
them in overcoming personal
psychological problems.
Hajiya Uwa Shehu, call on
students to try their possible best in
participating in all the orientations
programs organize by the school
management she also called all
department to play the vital role of
organizing programs which enlightens
and educate students, students should
also feel free to consult (G&C) at their
working time 8:00am, 4:00pm
